My Background - From Student Mentor to Professional Recruiter
My journey into recruiting started in college when I was enrolled at the University of Toledo. I was a Jr. Recruiter at the University of Toledo for their Trio Program. Trio is a program for military, first-generation, or students with disabilities, and the program helps promote independence and provide opportunities to students. As a first-generation college student, I wanted to help make an impact on other first-generation students and provide them with opportunities. I was responsible for assisting students in revising their resumes, attending job fairs, and connecting students with employment opportunities.
My Path through Technical and Healthcare Recruiting
Throughout my academic career, I attained healthcare recruiting experience from my internship with ProMedica. I was responsible for recruiting Medical Assistants, Patient Service Coordinators, and Medical Billing Coders. After graduation, I took a full-time position as a Technical Recruiter for ProMedica, recruiting a mix of Medical Assistants as well as Software Engineers, Software Developers, and Data Analysts. I learned a lot about Technical Recruiting and was able to advance my career due to this experience. After my time at ProMedica, I decided to branch off to recruit as a Technical Recruiter at Integrated Talent Strategies. At ITS, I primarily recruit for IT, but also HR, healthcare, and even finance.
What I Look for in Candidates: Skills Beyond the Resume
As a technical recruiter, I look for technical skills, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and cultural fit. These technical skills usually involve ensuring the candidate is proficient in relevant programming languages, frameworks, and general tools relevant to the role. The candidate must also be in alignment with the company's values, mission, and culture. Candidate tenure at a job is an important factor to consider during recruitment. While there's no specific "ideal" tenure, shorter tenures may raise questions about a candidate's stability and commitment, while longer tenures may indicate loyalty and a good fit with previous employers.
Ensuring Client Success: My Approach to Filling Positions
When working with a client to fill a position, I look for several key qualities to help ensure a successful hiring process and a good match for both the client and the candidate. A detailed understanding of the technical skills, experience, and qualifications required for the position helps guarantee that you can find the right candidate for the client. The availability of qualified candidates, salary ranges, and timeframes for the hiring process is always crucial to discuss with the client to set realistic expectations. A clear understanding of what they are looking for and why ensures a smooth hiring process, as well as a better chance of finding the perfect candidate for them.
